These cars are extensively inspected and represent the cream of the used car crop. All these high quality used cars on the market make this an excellent time to buy, but you still need to be an alert consumer. The following used vehicle buying tips will hopefully ease your quest.

Tips to buy Used car:

  • LOW MILEAGE - "Low miles" are magic words in the used vehicle business. People can beat up low mileage cars, but generally, lower mileage means less use. Lower mileage will be a benefit when you sell, and the lower mileage can provide more warranty eligibility.

  • POPULAR MODELS AND COLORS - You obviously can't custom order a used vehicle, so compromises are part of the deal.

  • PREVIOUS OWNERS - Investigate the number of previous owners. A vehicle that is only a couple of years old should be a one-owner affair. Even a five-year-old vehicle shouldn't, ideally, have more than two owners. A vehicle with multiple owners is a problem warning sign. The dealership should be able to provide the car's history.

  • DEPRECIATION VS. AGE - A great thing about late-model used car is that the previous owner has already absorbed a big chunk of the vehicle's depreciation. That first year's depreciation can be substantial. You want to buy just before the depreciation curve levels off and while the vehicle is as new as possible. The convergence of these factors varies by vehicle, but it generally falls in the two-to-four year old range. Study prices versus vehicle age to determine that ideal time.

Terms Defined
  • MSRP: “Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price”. This is the actual price that is typically attached to the car via a sticker on the window.
  • Invoice: This is an invoice provided by the manufacturer that is not actual Base Cost. Invoices have a hidden fee or "Holdback" that equals a percentage of the MSRP or Invoice price.
  • Shipping: The fee charged for transporting the vehicle to the dealer from the manufacturer. This charge is to be passed on to the buyer without any markup.
  • Hold Back: This is a non-published pricing promotion (discount) that is given back to the dealer at the conclusion of a sale of a vehicle.
  • Final Cost: This is derived by adding shipping to the invoice amount and subtracting any rebates and hold back.
